Men’s basketball: Virginia upset by George Washington
Garino and Cavanaugh led the Colonials with 18 points apiece. With just over three minutes to play, George Washington was assessed a technical foul for having six men on the court.
Garino had a tip-in and then an assist on Cavanaugh’s layup.
Virginia (1-1) was led by Malcolm Brogdon, who had 28 points and eight rebounds. Virginia missed 12 of its first 13 shots and saw Brogdon misfire on five of his seven field-goal attempts on Friday, but the Cavaliers showed off their strong supporting cast with a 24-9 surge to end the first half and 17-0 run to begin the second in an 86-48 rout of Morgan State. After Evan Nolte hit a 3-pointer to give Virginia a 55-54 lead with 9½ minutes left, Brogdon scored 11 consecutive points for the Cavs.
Cavanaugh dropped eight points in the first, scoring 10 more in the second while recording three rebounds and a steal. “We got outplayed. We got outexecuted”, Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “Sometimes you forget how hard it is, and these settings remind you awfully quick”.
The Colonials’ on-campus arena, The Smith Center, was sold out, and after their win, a few fans stormed the court, but didn’t get in the way of the departing Virginia players. In their previous meeting last season, Virginia came out on top, moving its SU record against the Colonials to 2-0. There are several games being played during that span and the contest between Virginia and George Washington is going to be better than it looks on paper. The Colonials earned their first win over a team ranked No. 6 or higher in 20 years when they defeated No. 1 UMass in 1995. Where George Washington really did their damage was at the free throw line. The ‘Hoos will travel to SC to play in the Charleston classic, beginning Thursday with a game against Bradley.
