Men’s gymnastics comes to close in Rio
Hambuechen took gold over American Danell Leyva, who grabbed his second silver medal of the day. Mikulak put up a 15.400 and was in third until Leyva came up as the very last one and unseated him, taking the silver at 15.500, pushing Mikulak into fourth.
The 28-year-old Hambüchen, a victor of 27 medals at worldwide competitions down the years, added Olympic gold to his trophy cabinet on Tuesday with a splendid showing on the risky horizontal bars.
In bronze medal position was Russia’s David Belyavsky.
Two full twisting somersaults over the bar – a Cassina followed by a Kolman – proved to be the highlights of a routine that ended with the German winding his arms backwards to steady his feet on dismount.
Wilson grabbed a sixth medal in gymnastics for the British team when he claimed bronze with 15.466. Verniaiev managed a score of 16.041, while Leyva came in at 15.900 in the event to earn a silver medal.
The Cuban-American gymnast was the 2011 U.S national all-around gold medalist and the 2011 world champion on the parallel bars.
Leyva’s silver is the first USA medal in men’s parallel bars since Jair Lynch won silver at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. He got back up and finished a lovely routine, but landed in seventh place. The nation that captured seven out of eight men’s golds in Beijing eight years ago will be leaving Rio with a solitary bronze medal they won in the team competition.
