Men’s tennis: Novak Djokovic leads top four into quarterfinals
Djokovic said he would apologise to the ballgirl after his roaring left her visibly shaken.
London: World number one Novak Djokovic, who survived a major scare against Kevin Anderson in his fourth-round match in Wimbledon on Tuesday, says he will apologise to a ball girl after appearing to shout at her.
Djokovic held to 15 to confirm the victory, and on the evidence of Wednesday’s showing, it is going to take some performance to prevent him from winning a third title in SW19.
The set went with serve until two consecutive Anderson double faults at 5-5 handed the world No 1 a pair of break points. They’re overwhelmed by the importance of the tournament, how big the stage is.
With the loss, Anderson became the first player in the Open era to reach the fourth round at Grand Slam tournaments seven times without ever advancing to the quarterfinals. That includes a five-set victory in the Wimbledon quarterfinals a year ago. So he has been playing at a high level and we meet again in the quarter-finals. Then went on to win 6-7 (6-8) 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 6-4 7-5. It was relief.
“I think Kevin served exceptionally well”.
“I haven’t had great success against her. I would love to change that around”, Sharapova said.
It’s 9-9 in the fifth set, with Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet holding easily. “It was a very intense final game so it is just relief”, Muguruza said.
“Until the last moment, until the last point, I didn’t know if I was going to win or not”.
Starting at the same time on No. 1 Court will be Federer’s attempt to keep his hopes alive for an unprecedented eighth Wimbledon title when taking on Gilles Simon.
The Johannesburg-born player continued to dominate in the early part of the second set as he broke the number one seed and, despite seeing his own serve falter, the 6ft 8in player was able to secure another tie-break success to move into a 2-0 lead. Any reason for that, he was asked.
“Maybe the guys are returning bad”, joked Federer. But their chance at a third major title came to a close with a quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon. “So if that is the case, and I won’t bank on that being the case, but if that is the case, I’ll try to use that to my advantage”.
Murray has also been comfortable so far and there has not been the same mania.
Federer will play either Andy Murray or Vasek Pospisil in Friday’s semifinals. It can’t get better midway through the second week.
