Mertens: ‘Staying at Napoli’
Liverpool target Dries Mertens has confirmed that he will not be leaving Napoli this summer, according to reports from the Daily Star.
Napoli failed to qualify for the Champions League last term, and the Belgium international’s agent revealed that he was considering a move last month, as per the Express.
Inter Milan and Schalke have been credited with an interest but Mertens, 28, is keen to remain with the Partenopei and fight for a place in new boss Maurizio Sarri’s line-up.
Mertens, however, said he wants to see out his contract through to 2018.
Liverpool linked winger Dries Mertens insists he is happy plying his trade for Napoli in Italy.
“I’m not leaving Napoli, we’re working to finish as high as possible”, the 28-year-old said in quotes attributed to SportMediaset.
“With Sarri, not much will change for me”.
Mertens scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions for Napoli last season.
“We have a very strong attack and if we can work well in other parts of the pitch we will do great things”.
Club legend Steven Gerrard has also departed, but they have brought in six players so far, including Roberto Firmino, James Milner, and Nathaniel Clyne.
