According to National Weather Service data, Bartlett is the first person to be killed by lightning this year in Denver; the Mount Yale region was hit by just two cloud-to-ground lightning flashes on Friday. The couple had been married for only a week.

A Colorado woman was killed by lightning in front of her new husband, just six days after their wedding.
“Just was a great teacher, she brought so much to her students every day”, Principal Kristen Morel said.
“We called her Katie-Bug”. “My heart goes to (Pocius) incredibly”. “She worked very hard on her teaching, getting her degree, her license; and once she found Ryan it felt like the whole package was really compete”. They also plan to donate to causes Bartlett loved, including charities benefitting “nature, educating children with special needs, the elderly, and animals”.
Another friend said that Bartlett was a wonderful friend and a “dedicated educator who touched many lives through her care for young children and her support of families”.
“Wherever they were with the special gifts that they brought to our program, and to her classroom, she is able to bring that child to a new level of learning”, Bartlett said.
Other friends describe Bartlett as a lovely person who had a passion for teaching.
“It’s just really hard to see that they only had such a short time together”, she said.
Kathleen Bartlett was married on July 11 to her partner Ryan Pocious – but when the pair was out hiking on July 17, they were hit by a sudden bolt of lightning.
