Mets activate Cespedes, Cabrera from disabled list
Sean Miller led off with a line single to center, went to second on Daniel Kihle’s bunt single. The lefty was scratched from his Friday start against the Giants because of discomfort in the shoulder that had arisen during throwing sessions since his start last Sunday against the Padres, when he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. The Mets slugger who was activated off the disabled list before Friday’s game was emphatic when asked about the controversy surrounding his golf habit and his nagging right quad strain.
Steven Matz will fly back to NY to have his shoulder examined by team doctors on Monday, Collins said. “And it’s not just that I believe that; the doctors actually said that golf did not affect me”. “I haven’t done that a whole lot since I’ve been here”. Span followed with another RBI single to push the lead to 3-1.
Cabrera landed on the disabled list with a.255 batting average, 13 homers, and 33 RBI in 100 games played. Cueto allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings to pick up his 14th win of the season. “We just didn’t hold them”. Walker missed his fourth straight start after suffering stiffness in his back earlier this week. The manager did say Jon Niese will start the series on Tuesday, as the Mets want to give their starters an extra day of rest. Getting Cespedes back and healthy will help them accomplish that.
“They’re talented, talented guys”, Collins said.
Mets COO Jeff Wilpon was at AT&T Park and said that he and two other Mets officials drove up to Calistoga to present Tom Seaver with a ring commemorating the 2015 National League Champions ring at the former Mets’ pitcher’s family vineyard.
Josh Smoker arrived from Triple-A Las Vegas to give the Mets a fresh arm in the bullpen. Wilpon said the 71-year-old Seaver is doing “great”.
Smoker previously joined the team as the 26th man for the doubleheader against the Cardinals on July 26, and then headed back to the minors.
BRIEFS: The team optioned infielder T. J. Rivera and infielder/outfielder Ty Kelly to make room for Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera on the active roster.
