Mets beat Rockies by same 14-9 score for 2nd straight day
New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes chose to bust out in a major way at Coors Field on Friday night with 3 HR and 7 RBI. The Mets now lead just three and a half games over the Nats in the division, without Washington going for the sweep on Thursday night.
Cespedes set career highs in homers, hits, RBIs and runs.
“We’re in the Hall of Fame if we can go in as a tandem”, Cuddyer said, drawing laughs. Colorado is led on offense by young star Nolan Arenado, who has a WAR of 4.5, and all-star Carlos Gonzalez, with a WAR of 2.7.

Cespedes was the biggest reason why. Eric O’Flaherty came on, and shortstop Jose Reyes greeted him with his second homer with the Rockies and sixth overall this season to cut the Mets’ lead to 14-8.The teams had traded three-run innings in the second before the Mets exploded in the third.
The centre fielder hit a grand slam in the second inning and a solo shot in the fourth. His first home run was a grand slam, his second came with the bases empty, and his third was a two-run shot. Gray faced two more batters, retiring one, before being pulled by Rockies manager Walt Weiss. I don’t think I got ahead of any guys tonight. Lucas Duda was the last to accomplish the feat on July 29 against San Diego.
According to Baseball-Reference.com, Cespedes is the first player since 1922 with five hits, five runs, seven RBIs and a stolen base. In that game, Alfonzo clobbered three homers, a double and two singles while knocking in five runs. While Colon had already surrendered a run on two hits before being hit, he served up lots of hittable pitches for the remainder of the game.
Right fielder Andre Ethier walked to start the second inning and centre fielder Joc Pederson reached on a leadoff walk to begin the third, but from that point on Fiers was firing on all cylinders. Aside from being allowed to get six more outs, it was actually a very similar outing to Gray’s. “It was just bad”. He tossed 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Christian Friedrich (0-4) was the losing pitcher after giving up Cespedes’ third homer.Sean Gilmartin (2-1), who relieved starter Bartolo Colon in the fourth, earned the victory.
The Rockies aren’t thinking playoffs at all, now sitting 18 games back of the Dodgers for first place in the NL West, and 19 games back of the final wild-card spot in the National League. Duda had missed six starts with a lower back strain before returning Tuesday….
