Mets’ Blevins breaks arm again, finished for season
Jerry Blevins re-injured the distal radius fracture in his left arm and needs season-ending surgery. His recent accident will likely be leading to surgery for on his arm, and his season will be over.
Hopefully Blevins’ unfortunate misstep, just the latest in a series of funky sports injuries we’ve seen recently, doesn’t curb the enthusiasm of Mets fans about the rest of the season. In seven appearances, Blevins had a spotless 0.00 ERA with four strikeouts in five innings pitched, winning his only decision of the season in a 7-5 victory over the Marlins on April 16.
On Tuesday, the Mets acquired lefty reliever Eric O’Flaherty and cash in a trade with Oakland for a player to be named later. A few years ago with the Atlanta Braves, O’Flaherty was one of the top relievers in baseball.
With the Mets now in a heated battle with the Nationals for NL East predominance, they really could have used a lefty specialist like Blevins down the stretch, particularly in a potential playoff run.
The loss of Blevins is a tough one for the Mets, as he had begun to start throwing, and would’ve been a big boost to the bullpen.
