Mets focusing on Milwaukee’s Carlos Gomez in trade talks
Gomez is hitting.262/.328/.423 with eight home runs and 20 doubles in 74 games this season for Milwaukee.
The New York Mets may look to add Carlos Gonzalez, 29, a two-time All-Star who fits the description of a big-hitting outfielder, which the Mets have been searching for desperately.
It’s clear New York is still in need of a middle-of-the-order bat and that’s exactly what Alderson is scouring the market for.
The Brewers have been looking to be “blown away” in a deal for Gomez, so the Mets would have to be offering a pretty good amount in return if they are indeed close to trading for him. Yet Milwaukee Brewers teammate Gerardo Parra, an adept defender enjoying his best offensive output by far of his career (.324/.365/.517), represents a more realistic target.
The Brewers have some interesting trade pieces that could be available at the deadline including outfielder Carlos Gomez and closer Francisco Rodriguez. He can then become a free agent. The Orioles have been seen as another pursuer of Upton, and the Astros are among other teams to have checked in, as well. He’s also set to earn million next season, a massive bargain for a star of his caliber.
Bruce also is of interest to the Mets, and sources suggest that at one point the Reds were showing interest in young pitcher Zack Wheeler, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, in a Bruce deal.
Another potential suitor for Bruce was the Los Angeles Angels, but they acquired three outfielders on Monday and Tuesday, so it’s likely they’re out of the running for the slugger.
