Mets injury update: David Wright to DH for St. Lucie tomorrow
And those odds might look quite a bit better soon: While the big-league Mets took on the Rockies in Queens, seven-time All-Star David Wright went 1-for-3 with a walk in his first rehab game for Class A Advanced St. Lucie as he works to return from the back condition that has sidelined him for all but eight games of the 2015 season. Following Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil’s groundout to first base, Wright lined a single into center field off left-hander Stephen Gonsalves.
But the Mets didn’t score until they strung together three singles in the sixth inning, the last by Ruben Tejada to push in the winning run. “I’m going to try to play within myself and not go insane”.
The latter drew the start Monday against right-hander Jon Gray, but Cuddyer should start both Tuesday and Wednesday against left-handers Chris Rusin and Jorge De La Rosa. Cuddyer, a 36-year-old veteran who is regarded as the most genuine person in the clubhouse, said he had no problem accepting a diminished role.
“I don’t think it’s too serious”, Duda said. “Whatever (manager) Terry (Collins) feels is going to help him win the game, that’s what I’m about”.
Wright estimates he’ll need about 30 plate appearances before he can return to the Majors, and, given his condition and his recent history, a lot can certainly go wrong before he gets there. “To actually come out here and participate in a game, from where I felt a couple months ago, is solid”. “It will be a good test for me tomorrow”. He hadn’t played since being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column.
“I know I’m a crappy speaker and I don’t get my point across very much but if there’s no news, it’s good news”.
