Mets sell Tim Tebow jerseys as ex-QB begins pro baseball career
The 2007 Heisman Trophy victor from the University of Florida and former NFL quarterback (Broncos, Jets) will also be leaving periodically over the next several weeks to fulfill broadcasting duties he has with college football, something he and the team have stressed won’t cause an issue. He showed some rust, popping up a half-dozen pitches in that same session. He was still mopping sweat off his brow with an orange towel more than a half-hour after leaving the field, acknowledged he still has a lot to learn and said he was hoping teammates would be comfortable having him around. “It was great to be on a team”.
“I’m just going out there to try to perform and get better and learn the system just like they are, and I think once you get to know each other hopefully that’s what they find out about me”.
Predictably, it was also a circus atmosphere. But Tebow signed a bridge agreement last week that allows the Mets to merchandise him before he makes the majors.
Nevertheless, the loophole seems like it gives NY the ability to make a ton of money off Tebow’s baseball career.
On his first day, Tebow took batting practice and caught fly balls in the outfield.
“Never been here before”, said Sarah Dale, a waitress who works an overnight shift and now says she’ll be a Mets fan. Hes a people person.
Less than a month ago, Tebow was in the Philippines working at his Christian ministry for special-needs and ill children.
Though he is not part of the players union and typically sales of players not on the 40-man roster are prohibited, the Mets are selling Tebow jerseys in the team store and elsewhere, including outside the workout facility on Monday morning.
The former football player is now through two practices with the New York Mets. It’s a training camp that allows young players to develop their skills within a structured environment, something that will benefit Tebow as someone who hasn’t played organized baseball since his junior year in high school.
Tebow worked out in front of major league scouts in Los Angeles last month.
A lot people inside and outside of baseball expect Tebow to fall flat on his face. I mean, I guess I have a little chip. You want to prove them right.
