Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera exits game with knee injury
Cabrera appeared to hurt himself taking his first step after touching third base, after which he hopped and slowed down dramatically as he hobbled home, putting little weight on the left leg. In doing so, the Mets averted a four-game sweep and finished 1-6 against the Rockies (52-53) this year.
Victory came at great cost, as it often has in a season rife with injuries.
New York Mets first base coach Tom Goodwin, left, bench coach Dick Scott, center, and a team trainer, second from right, help Asdrubal Cabrera off the field after Cabrera doubled over after scoring on Neil Miller’s first-inning RBI-triple during a baseball game against the Colorado Rockies, Sunday, July 31, 2016, in New York.
At game’s end, the Mets hadn’t announced whether the veteran would require a DL stint. Cabrera, 30, had been among the most durable Mets, playing in 101 of the club’s 104 games.
Assuming Cabrera is placed on the disabled list, the Mets could look to Triple-A Las Vegas for bona fide shortstop Gavin Cecchini, a 2012 first-round pick. In fact, a potentially wet field was one reason Mets manager Terry Collins held Cespedes out of the lineup.
Carlos Gonzalez hit a tying RBI double in the fifth and a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh off victor Jerry Blevins (4-1).
But the Mets roared back in the seventh.
Mets to add a bat before trade deadline?
Wilmer Flores shifted to shortstop in place of Cabrera, while Kelly Johnson entered the game at third base.
But Walker has since caught fire, going 13-for-22. It was Walker’s 17th home of the season and his sixth as a right-handed batter, which has historically been his weaker side.
Addison Reed struck out three in a one-hit eighth, and Familia fanned two in a flawless ninth for his 37th save in 39 attempts this year.
Noah Syndergaard tossed a career-high 118 pitches in six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.
