Mets’ Yoenis Cespdes explodes with career-night on Friday
New York Mets’ Juan Uribe follows the flight of his solo home run… But Hundley was erased at the plate trying to tag up on Kyle Parker’s flyout to Curtis Granderson, and momentum swung back to the Mets.
As always, Coors Field itself provided a good time with a lot of fun riffs on the Star Wars theme, from a Cargo Fett bobblehead to covering all the Mets’ pictures with storm trooper masks (except Michael Cuddyer, who was Darth Vader, for obvious reasons).
Coming off a complete game shut-out in his last start on Sunday, Chris Rusin was torn apart, giving up eight doubles and a home run to allow 11 runs. It was the second slam of his career. Cespedes’ 5 hits is his new career high. Niese comes off of a 5-3 defeat to Pittsburgh where he gave up three runs on five hits including a pair of homers in six frames.
Joining Vinny: Third base hadn’t been a power position for the Rockies since the days of Vinny Castilla (1993-99, 2004) – until Arenado’s arrival.
Arenado’s three-run homer off Bartolo Colon in the fourth was his 30th of the season.
So far this season, the Mets are 4-0 against the Rockies.
“I loved it. Loved that I was a part of it”, Niese said. This is a stretch you have to make hay, because we are going to run into the Yankees and run into the Nationals.
“But, it’s great to hit 30”. “I was trying to hit a triple”. As badly as Harvey wants to take the ball, he can’t argue with the numbers, even if there is insufficient data as to how much the innings limit will prevent a further injury in returning from Tommy John surgery. Then he couldn’t stop the negative spin in the second.
“I wasn’t too precise with the pitch and he took advantage of it”, Gray said. “They were the right pitch calls, just not in the right spot”.
“Tough to keep him down for long”, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “But there’s something to be learned every night, especially for a young pitcher”. “This was the best night I have ever had”. No one likes to lose.
Like last night, the Rockies lost to the Mets 14-to-9. Hopefully, we can find a change, and hopefully it’s soon. Rockies C Dustin Garneau is the 25th player in franchise history to get a hit on his first at-bat in the majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
With the Mets now in desperate need of bullpen help, that was likely Conforto’s goodbye blast as he’ll probably be flipped to Triple-A Las Vegas for another arm before Saturday’s game.
Cespedes wasn’t thinking of a fourth homer, his sights set instead on hitting for the cycle. New York increased its lead over second-place Washington in the National League East to five games as it defeated Colorado for the fifth time in as many meetings this season.
