Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes joins select company with 3-home run game vs. Colorado
Just call them the Mile High club.
However, this is Coors Field and, despite the six-run deficit for the Rockies, the game was far from over.
The New York Mets hope for more fireworks from Yoenis Cespedes when they continue their three-game series against the host Colorado Rockies on Saturday. The Mets have now won nine straight games over the Rockies. The Mets finished with 21 hits, matching their season high established against the Dodgers on July 25.
“All I had in my mind is go to third”, Cespedes said. It’s not fun. It’s pretty bad, the way we’ve lost these games lately.
“This is how a lot of teams win pennants”, Collins said. New York comes off of a brief two game set in Baltimore, where they split the two games they played.
It all unraveled for Gray in the second inning.
Yoenis Céspedes hits 3 home runs & drives in 7 as Mets beat Rockies, 14-9. “But it just came down to execution and it wasn’t there”, Gray said. “It’s not an easy place to be consistent”. It would be nice to see him get his first major league start Sunday in a day-game-after-a-night-game scenario.
He’s supposed to be capped at roughly 190 innings for the regular season, but he’s already up to 154 through 23 starts.
Gray was never as sharp in this outing as he had been the past couple, though, and he gave up six runs in the second inning, eventually getting chased from the game after just 45 pitches.
The Mets’ 14-run outburst thrilled The 7-Line Army. As badly as Harvey wants to take the ball, he can’t argue with the numbers, even if there is insufficient data as to how much the innings limit will prevent a further injury in returning from Tommy John surgery.
Colorado is a slight -112 favorite in this game and the Over/Under (O/U) is 11 runs. With that, Cespedes became the first player in baseball history to be one hit shy of both of these achievements in the same game.
While the Mets pulled away in the later innings Friday to secure the win, they had an eight-run third inning Saturday to take an 11-3 lead and were not challenged the rest of the night. Every New York starter had at least one hit, with pitcher Jonathon Niese (8-9) delivering a two-run single in the big third.
Ranking 28th in runs, New York has earned 447 this season. Travis d’Arnaud’s second double in as many innings also produced a run.
“After I got that last out everything kind of hit me”, he said. “And I loved that I was a part of it”.
Kyle Parker tripled, doubled and drove in four runs for Colorado. This is a stretch you have to make hay, because we are going to run into the Yankees and run into the Nationals.
The Mets scored three runs in the top of the inning on four doubles. The 30-year-old Fiers struck out batter Justin Turner on his 134th pitch to finish off the no-hitter in front of a crowd of 33,800 at Minute Maid Park.
“[Coors Field] tests your nerves”, Collins said.
