Isadore Hall, D-Compton, on Thursday introduced a resolution calling on California to divest from Donald Trump and his business enterprises in the wake of inflammatory remarks about Mexican immigrants.
The Republican presidential hopeful has been under fire since announcing his bid for the White House, when he said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best”.
The dinner for Trump, which was scheduled before he made the controversial remarks, is a private event and will follow his visit with Jamiel Shaw, father of Jamiel Shaw II, a high school football standout who was shot and killed in Arlington Heights in 2008 by a gang member who was living in the country illegally.
Shaw said Trump had gone easy with his language when he talked about Mexican undocumented immigrants being “rapists “and “criminals”””.
“We must protect American citizens”, Shaw told reporters.
“I have many, many people who work for me who are Mexican”, he said.
“I know people are saying he didn’t say it right, but if you look at it, there’s really no right way to say all the carnage and crime that’s going on”, said Shaw.
As Donald Trump is making headlines with his uncensored comments about Mexico, companies are dropping his brand and Latinos are speaking out against the businessman-turned-politician. He had been freed from jail two days before the shooting without immigration authorities placing a hold on him.
The candidate-tycoon is also expected to speak to a gathering of conservatives in the entertainment industry.
Jorge-Mario Cabrera, a spokesman for the CHIRLA Action Fund, a group demonstrating against Trump’s speech Friday evening, said his group doesn’t plan to protest Trump’s meeting with the families of crime victims, but it did see the decision as “a continuation of the hate rhetoric”.
