Mexican Government Contradicts Sean Penn ‘El Chapo’ Interview
This week, following Mexico’s recapture of the fugitive cartel boss and Rolling Stone’s publication of an interview Guzman gave to actor Sean Penn, Twitter users once again have El Chapo top of mind – and they’re wondering how his rumoured “feud” with Trump will play out now that he’s back in custody.
The Mexican daily Milenio on Wednesday released a transcript of phone texts between Del Castillo and El Chapo that were exchanged prior to Guzman’s arrest.
A senior government official, who declined to be identified, said one reason Guzman left his redoubt in the Sierra Madre mountains of Sinaloa for Los Mochis was because he was desperate to set up another meeting with the Los Angeles-based actress.
Late Tuesday, a Mexican federal official said the government is moving Guzman constantly from cell to cell. “You’ll know my story when we have time to speak, but for some reason I feel safe and I know you know who I am, not as an actress or a public figure, but as a woman, as a person”, she later responded.
The shirts, which are being offered for sale at $128 (118 euros), are the same as the one worn by El Chapo on film, Sandra Mancia, a representative of the store told AFP.
She never received the flowers, but did maintain contact with Guzman and his lawyers.
During his previous 17 month stint behind bars, Guzman asked his lawyers to begin the process of trade-marking his name with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Mexican journalist Carlos Loret de Mola said. Another of his lawyers said reports the two were close were “speculation”.
You wouldn’t mistake the mustachioed druglord for the bearded, coiffed model.
“I’ll tell you, I am more excited about you than the (movie) script”, Guzman wrote to Del Castillo, to whom he had identified in his chat or text account as “ermoza”, a misspelling of the Spanish word for “beautiful”.
It was Guzman who first approached del Castillo, after she posted positive messages online about him.
“I’ll take care of you”. “So I don’t know, I guess we have bigger problems in this country, but I guess it is a little fantastic that he was able to get an interview with a guy that everybody else was looking for, right?” I’m very excited about our story.
Penn revealed he and his associates were met by members of Guzman’s trusted entourage upon arrival at a small Mexican airport in October (15), and they were driven to the middle of a jungle, where the drug lord had been hiding out. The company advertised it alongside Guzman’s picture, with the slogan “Most Wanted…”
The Mexican government said authorities were investigating the “actions” surrounding the meeting, not the people directly.
“Come now because I’m dying to look after you, the way it should be”, he wrote.
