Mexico Extraditing Drug Lord to US
Mexico has extradited to the United States 13 alleged drug traffickers, including a high-profile suspect nicknamed ‘La Barbie, ‘ authorities said Wednesday.
“I am grateful to our Mexican counterparts not only for their assistance with this important matter, but also for their extraordinary efforts and unwavering partnership in our ongoing fight against worldwide organized crime”, said Lynch.
“The narcos had been held in Mexico’s maximum security prison, Altiplano, in Mexico City-the same one Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman” escaped from in July. Agents arrested him after he arrived in Las Vegas in 2013 on a flight from Mexico.
Thirteen defendants, along with Drug lord “La Barbie”, were extradited by Mexico to the US late Wednesday. The number of extraditions dropped with the closing down of access to Mexican officials, apart from a “single window” in the Interior Secretary.
“My guess it is that they’re probably starting to make amends for El Chapo”, he added. “Maybe they don’t feel as safe now about the security in the prison system”.
He said the extradited group also included Jose Emanuel Garcia Sota, who is charged in the 2011 killing of ICE agent Jaime Zapata in San Luis Potosi. Three suspects charged in the March 2010 murders of U.S. Consulate employees in Ciudad Juarez also were sent to the U.S.
“After the jailbreak, the Mexican government revealed it had received a USA extradition request for the Sinaloa boss, who was the most wanted drug lord in the world before his capture in February 2014”.
Many experts agreed there was no direct relation with the Guzman case; extradition requests can take years to complete.
The Pena Nieto administration was initially against extradition.
Critics said Pena Nieto should have handed over Guzman given Mexico’s past record with the capo. Mexican and US officials believe a few of the grenades Kingery’s factory supplied to cartels ended up being used against Mexican military members and cartel rivals. He is wanted on multiple US indictments, including one in Atlanta, where is expected to eventually face trial, USA law enforcement officials said.
