Mexico says Sean Penn meeting was ‘essential’ to finding kingpin Chapo

It was the end of his freedom, but the circus was just beginning.

Guzman was finally captured on Friday in a raid that left five suspects dead in Los Mochis, a coastal city in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, six months after his prison break.

It took the Mexican authorities at least 90 minutes to find the passageway, a senior law enforcement source told CNN. Among the pictures on the company’s Facebook page is one of a Mexican singer known as “El Komander”, whose songs glorify Mexico’s drug lords. July’s escape was Guzman’s second from a maximum security prison and it deeply embarrassed the government of President Enrique Pena Nieto. The Mexican Attorney General said Guzman’s recapture came after a huge surveillance operation.

The US government wants Guzman on charges ranging from drug trafficking to money laundering, and kidnapping to murder.

Transcripts of over a month of text messages between drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo showed the capo was less interested in making a movie about his life than he was in flirting with the actress.

In the end, whether it was his interest in the actress or the movie project, it appeared to be all about Guzman’s ego.

Gomez vowed to fight any injunction and some experts say the government could try a “fast-track” extradition maneuver to speed up the process.

The images are part of a Mexican intelligence report obtained by the daily.

But the timing of the interview coincides with reported sightings and near-misses.

“They paint them as heroes, and attractive and generous”, Sanchez said.

Mr. Penn’s excursion, linked to Ms. Del Castillo’s intention of producing a biopic about the notorious drug purveyor, is best understood as Hollywood business at the extreme.

“You can argue it’s morally reprehensible”.

Though timing is still up in the air, Rose hopes the interview happens “sooner than later”, he said.

“I have a thousand questions for Sean”, the “CBS This Morning” anchor said. The story includes a disclosure about the unusual arrangement but says Guzman did not request any changes. “When it will happen will depend on when we can agree on the date to do it”, Rose said, according to The Los Angeles Times.
