Mexico shows security footage of Guzman moments before he disappeared into
Mexico is offering a reward of 60 million pesos ($3.8m) for the capture of the country’s most-wanted drug lord, who escaped from a top security prison.
Guzman broke out of prison by slipping down a shaft from his prison cell’s shower late Saturday night.
Supporters of Guzman – known as El Chapo, or “Shorty” – wasted no time in lambasting the Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto as a “coward”, but reserved particular ire for Trump, the Republican presidential hopeful who has accused Mexico of sending rapists and criminals to the U.S.
The Donald went so far as to say he’d “kick [Guzman’s] ass”, while his opponents would merely negotiate with him.
“We can’t omit that, to achieve his goal, the now fugitive (referring to Guzman) must have had the complicity of personnel and or officials from the Altiplano prison”.
It’s believed he slipped through a hole in his cell’s shower, and then trekked through a roughly mile long tunnel.
During the escape, Guzman disposed of a bracelet that only he and a few other high-risk inmates had to wear, and smashed bulbs lighting up the tunnel as he fled, the minister added.
McCaul, the chairman of the powerful House Homeland Security Committee, reminded the news network that he urged Guzmán’s quick transfer from Mexico to the United States after the kingpin was captured in the resort city of Mazatlán a year ago.
After the brazen escape, there are the “official” tweets.
Authorities have 96 hours to either charge or release the 22 prison officials who were placed in custody on Tuesday. He announced that three prison officials had been fired, including Valentin Cardenas, director of the Altiplano prison 55 miles (90 kilometres) west of Mexico City. The sophisticated tunnel described by Mexican authorities would usually take about a year and half to two years to complete, Dinkins said, suggesting it was started nearly immediately after Guzman’s arrest in 2014. Come on, man. The motorcycle was a nice touch, though El Chapo might have gotten a limo had he waited a couple of more days.
Trump used the Mexican’s escape to continue his anti-immigrant rhetoric and to criticise US border policies and the war on drugs.
His drug cartel are experts in tunnel digging for drug smuggling.
State Department spokesman John Kirby said Guzman’s “swift recapture by Mexican authorities is a priority for both the Mexican and the USA governments”. Some people stated their frustration, but also expressed how they weren’t surprised about his escape after all, since this is not the first time that this drug lord has escaped.
