Mexico: Trump Is Keeping His Promise
President-elect Donald Trump is adamant United States companies will be think twice before moving their business out of the country while he’s in office.
Earlier today, Trump made an appearance with Mike Pence to celebrate a deal struck with Carrier, which prevented the company from relocating an IN plant to Mexico, saving 1,000 manufacturing jobs for American employees.
Having run and won on the promise of keeping American jobs home, United States president-elect Donald Trump on Thursday threatened USA companies relocating operations and jobs overseas with “consequences” – essentially higher duty on their products.
Despite saying he didn’t remember his promise, Trump is now fully claiming that his intervention kept the jobs in the United States – and said the man on television deserved credit.
Eventually, they were able to reach a deal where Hayes agreed to keep 1,000 manufacturing jobs in the in plant.
Since Carrier’s announcement in February, several plants in IN have announced they will leave the country, leaving thousands more Hoosiers without a job. The state of IN threw IN $7 million IN tax incentives, but those weren’t decisive. But it was clear at that time that Carrier rebuffed those attempts, said Tatikonda.
In addition to that, United Technologies Electronic Controls also said that they are planning to relocate its Huntington manufacturing operations to a recently developed plant in Mexico, which will affect 700 northeastern in city workers lose their job by 2018.
“Mr. Trump would have to make 804 more announcements just like that to equal the standard of jobs in the manufacturing sector that were created in this country under President Obama’s watch”, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on Thursday.
“In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won”. I hope he saves every American job, I really do. And both stops will feature Trump declaring victory after a campaign built on the lament that “we don’t win anymore” as a nation.
To get the higher number, Carrier and Trump are counting 300 jobs that weren’t at risk of being shipped to Mexico. But it’s still moving 600 jobs to Mexico to make fan coils. United Technologies is a defense contractor that gets a lot of money from the government. “Trust me: We’re going to build that wall”. We owe it to those families to come together as a state and a country to enact much-needed reform that will prevent future offshoring of Indianapolis jobs and invest in our local workforce.
During his victory lap in Indiana, Trump made a point to refer to Cornett as “handsome”, in the process praising his mother, who was in attendance during the speech. Donald Trump suffers from a similar industrial-policy temptation, as we’ve seen this week with his arm-twisting of Carrier to change its decision to move a plant to Mexico from Indiana.
The large number of layoffs cast a pall over Trump’s surprising deal to keep the Indianapolis plant open.
As Mayor, I’m mindful of who wasn’t in the room today – hundreds more Indianapolis workers whose jobs are leaving or have already left our city.
