MI extends Flint water emergency, $28M approved to address crisis
The river had a reputation for nastiness, and after the April 2014 switch, … Michael Moore is speaking out about the current bottled water donations, warning of a wholle new environmental disaster if trucking in water is the government solution to the lead-poisoned local drinking water. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican told reporters in the Capitol. But, he said, “Flint is in many ways a wake-up call for the country”. The proposal would require the state of MI to match any federal funding. In Serbing, Ohio, residents learned only days ago that “high levels of lead were detected in some homes over the summer” due to investigation by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
The Flint Journal-MLive requested comment on the water purchases by the state from Dave Murray, press secretary to Gov. Rick Snyder, who referred questions to Caleb Buhs from the state Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
Make the state of MI pay for the disaster that the state of MI created.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also pointed blame at the Republican governor.
“Even people who live in areas with the most ethical water utilities that are doing absolutely everything right”, Lambrinidou says, “ought to be thinking very carefully about taking routine precautions, even when their water utility tells them that their water is safe to drink”. “Why can’t we be drinking clean water too”.
Cornyn was asked if he has concerns Republicans could appear insensitive to the largely poor and African-American community if they reject the legislation.
“We have to take the necessary steps at the state and federal government levels”. Gary Peters of MI, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, in a statement, according to ABC News. Up to $400 million would go “to replacing and repairing water pipes in Flint, matching state funds, while $200 million would go to establish a “center of excellence” on lead exposure from drinking water”.
And if you’re really itching to use that Amazon Prime account, what do people in Flint really want?
The Michigan Senate voted today to direct another $28 million to address Flint’s water emergency, allocating money for bottled water, medical assessments and other costs in the city struggling with a lead-contaminated supply. Democrats say state officials have a primary responsibility to fix the crisis “because they made a number of irresponsible decisions that caused it”.
Henry Allen Jr., president of the Colorado Springs NAACP, said he and leadership at New Jerusalem took a look around Colorado and didn’t find any other groups collecting water for the Flint cause.
A bill that would give the city of Flint $3 million that could be used to address part of the problem was approved by the Michigan Legislature. Peters and Stabenow and Rep. Dan Kildee, all Democrats, say the state should be picking up at least half that bill.
“The challenge, obviously, is on the resources”, Stabenow said.
