MI State’s Sarah Kovan named 2016 Rhodes Scholar
Now, two months later, the Wellesley native has learned that he is one of 32 people from across the country – and one of six who live or attend school in MA – to receive the prestigious 2016 Rhodes Scholarship award. “Congratulations also to the faculty who taught Emily and to the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement (CUSE) who put in countless hours assisting Emily and other candidates for the Rhodes and other scholars’ programs”.
Higgins said winning a Rhodes scholarship is a “surreal” experience.
Hebert, a biological basis of behaviormajor from Pittsburgh, is the first Penn student to win one of the American scholarships since 2009 College graduate Sarah-Jane Littleford.
“While studying in the United Kingdom, I can only hope to adequately live up to Notre Dame’s mission of applying scholarly activity to the pursuit of the common good and with concern for the poverty and injustice that plagues our world today”. While at Oxford, Carroll will work on p53, which is a tumor suppressor that is implicated in about half of all cancer cases.
“I’m planning on studying the influence of microbes in the guts on brain biology and their relevance to mental illness”, she said, explaining how recent research has found that certain bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract might influence the brain. Her senior honors thesis is focused on the effects of nicotine and stress on neural circuitry.
Orr plans to pursue a Master of Philosophy in Economics at Oxford.
Obtaining this prestigious honor was no easy feat.
