MI State University senior selected as Rhodes scholar
Ruckelshaus-a political science major with minors in philosophy, history and English-is a Duke Student Government senator, a Harry S. Truman Scholar and an Angier B. Duke Scholar.
The Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, British philanthropist and African colonial pioneer, and are provided in partnership with the Second Century Founder, John McCall MacBain and other generous benefactors.
The university announced late Saturday evening that Colin Higgins of Middleton has been picked to receive the Rhodes Scholarship, which funds study at England’s Oxford University. This year 2,000 students sought their institutions’ endorsement, the statement said, and 869 students were endorsed by 316 college and universities. He has also contributed to Klein’s Vox.com and Bloomberg View. He advises the Shepherd Center advisory board on ways the rehabilitation hospital in Atlanta can improve the experiences of patient and their families.
Oberlin senior Machmud A. Makhmudov of Lilburn, Georgia, is a politics major who came to Atlanta from his central Asian homeland of Uzbekistan 10 years ago. She also conducted research on non-governmental organizations in Uganda, interned in a clinic there and assessed Ugandan health care facilities.
Ruckelshaus is a member of the U.S. global Council on Disability, and he is the chair and director of operations for the Accessibility Matters Campaign at Duke. “It’s kind of shocking, but I was happy”, Jackson, 22, said in a phone interview Sunday evening. “The way I see my role is not so much, ‘I think this policy is a good idea, or I think this policy is a bad idea, ‘ but let me help clarify the trade-offs that you face”. Thank you to everyone!
Six of the 32 American recipients of the 2016 Rhodes scholarship awards are from MA or attend school here. “I’m thrilled for them”.
