Miami Dolphins’ 14-10 rally past Rams is pure Hollywood
For three and a half quarters, it worked.
But it was Gurley’s touchdown run that got Rams fans out of their seats. “And then after that, give him some throws near and dear to his heart, so he doesn’t have to read a lot – simple reads and quick throws”.
Goff completed 17 of his 31 passes for 134 yards, spending the entire game throwing short passes.
An offense that had done nothing all day took a 10-0 deficit and cut it to 10-7. They finished the game with 240 total yards – 14 more yards than the Rams – and 142 passing yards (172 yards for Tannehill who, despite struggling most of the game, recorded a decent 89.3 passer rating and put together the two scoring drives).
Goff came within 30 seconds of becoming the third rookie this season to win his first National Football League start, after the Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz and the New England Patriots’ Jacoby Brissett.
Not only have the Dolphins won four straight games they’ve also covered the spread in four consecutive contests. Los Angeles is now 4-6 on the year as they fell behind the Washington Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings for the last playoff spot in the NFC.
Dolphins coach Adam Gase said Goff played well. “We’re obviously disappointed with the result there at the end and how things turned out, and how we felt through the whole game and how in control we were”.
The Rams leaned on heavy run formations and max pass protection to make sure Goff was not under duress when he dropped back. Still, his 4.3 yards per attempt tell the story of a first-time starter leaning on short crossing routes and lobs over the middle. With that being said, quarterback Jared Goff, 22, who will start in place of Case Keenum, 28, will be the guy that everyone looks to when it comes to pressuring some mistakes from the opposing team. “I wish I could have done a little bit more, but I was fine”. It happened to the Bengals and New York Giants twice.
“I felt fine”, Quinn said. He’s got an arm. “He’s an athlete. And I think the team is behind him”. On Sunday, Fisher thought Goff was ready.
In the fourth quarter, with the Rams facing a 3rd-and-10 near midfield, the pocket collapsed and Goff was forced to flee, dodging Miami defenders in the backfield before taking off for the sideline.
The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year – a title that feels like a cruel joke at this point – remains mired in an offense that is good for only one or two competent drives per game.
All of this, of course, falls on Fisher, who must find a way to salvage this season and perhaps his job.
The Bucs had 27 first downs, converted 11 of 16 third down opportunities, gained 442 yards and Jameis Winston was 24 of 39 for 331 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He had an 89.3 passer rating and was sacked four times. Even Nick Foles, who was banished nearly as soon as the Rams drafted Goff, played well when he was needed in Kansas City. He was promoted to the No. 2 quarterback in Week 2.
That left the Rams to ponder how a winnable game, and a.500 record, got away on a sad, soggy Sunday.
Goff took a few shots. Ebron’s first carry of his career, a handoff as he went from left to right after lining up as an off-the-line tight end, was set up by his career-long, 61-yard catch.
“It took me a couple drives to settle in”, explained Goff.
