Michael Bloomberg Confirms He’s Eyeing White House Run
The interview marks the first time Bloomberg has publicly admitted his interest in a 2016 run. Bloomberg’s associates told the paper that he would need to make a decision “in early March”.
Mike Bloomberg said Monday he’s considering running for president because he’s disgusted by the tenor of the campaign so far, calling it “an insult to voters”.
However, there has been widespread skepticism over whether he’d actually toss his hat into the ring, since Bloomberg has been toying with the idea of a presidential run since 2006. The longtime Democrat switched his party affiliation to Republican before running for mayor in 2001. She said she believed Bloomberg would only join the race as an independent if she wasn’t chosen to be the nominee.
2016, however, is a very different race than either the 2008 or 2012 contests. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won the Democratic nomination and either Donald Trump or Sen. While there have been third party or independent candidates before – businessman Ross Perot ran in both 1992 and 1996, and activist Ralph Nader has stood in numerous elections – no independent candidate has ever been elected to the White House.
Financials should not be a problem for Bloomberg, who, according to Forbes, has a net worth of over $40 million.
On Monday, Mr Bloomberg criticised the current crop of candidates. Bloomberg is also the founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and its accompanying PAC, which he formed to counter the National Rifle Association.
The race for United States president is getting tighter ahead of Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.
In a matchup between Trump and Clinton, adding Bloomberg’s name to the ballot would trim Clinton’s lead over Trump to six percentage points from 10, according to the poll conducted from January 23 to January 27.
