Michael Moore warns Democrats: Block Trump’s Supreme Court nominee or get primaried
Colorado federal Judge Neil Gorsuch is likely to be the next justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, and brings with him the standard Ivy League academic qualifications and even a doctorate from Oxford.
“I’m hopeful that maybe President Trump will nominate someone that will get bipartisan support – but, yes, we’ll fight it tooth-and-nail as long as we have to”, he said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday.
Trump is a foe of environmental regulations who is working quickly to undo rules, programs and agreements backed by President Obama to slow global warming.
He’s described as a brilliant writer, a probing reader, a conservative intellectual and a Constitutional originalist in the mould of the late Antonin Scalia, whose sudden death previous year created the vacancy he fills. The Republicans are hoping to confirm the nomination by early April. Here’s a closer look at the three leading contenders. Trump, who decried the potential gridlock in comments to reporters Wednesday, is apparently more than happy to see that outcome. “Will Senate Democrats, due to their great frustration with the president, block this nomination?”
“In our legal order, it is for Congress and not the courts to write new laws”.
Gun rights: He hasn’t ruled directly on firearms restrictions, but is thought to be generally pro-second amendment. But as Schumer and other Democrats made clear, for many the fight was less about the mild-mannered 49-year-old appeals court judge than about Trump himself.
Can Democrats use a filibuster to block Trump’s nominee?
Trump noted that Democrats had previously supported the Denver-based Gorsuch, now on the 10th circuit court of appeals.
Jim DeMint is a former U.S. Senator from SC and the president of The Heritage Foundation.
Most importantly, Gorsuch has demonstrated that, like Scalia, he is a devoted textualist-meaning he interprets the law as it was actually written, rather than how he wishes it was written.
He is also known for his defense of religious exemptions for companies that did not want to comply with the Affordable Care Act’s provisions for guaranteeing coverage of birth control for women under their employee health insurance plans. Despite Gorsuch being a wonderfully qualified candidate, we’re already hearing vows from the Left to obstruct his path to confirmation.
While at Columbia University, Gorsuch co-founded a magazine called The Morningside Review, as well as a newspaper called The Federalist, both of which were established to oppose the liberal views at Columbia at the time.
Clearly he does not believe in legislating from the bench, a big problem with too many federal judges today, including several Supreme Court justices.
Trump also had considered Judge William Pryor from the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, although his chances of getting the nomination appeared to diminish in recent weeks.
Now President Trump has followed through on his promise, nominating a conservative judge to replace a conservative judge.
Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), who represents a state Trump won by more than 40 points, has urged his Democratic colleagues “to put partisan process aside and allow the process to proceed”. He lost the vote of at least one Republican, Sen. Susan Collins of ME, a signal that he could face opposition from moderate Republicans again if he gets picked for the high court.
The court has the final legal word on numerous most sensitive U.S. issues, including abortion, gender rights and gun control. But his record is mixed.
