Michael Phelps loses final individual Olympic race to Singapore’s Joseph Schooling
Phelps won his first gold medal in the 400M individual medley at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The country has won 5 Olympics medals in total.
Schooling was not a surprise gold medallist in Rio, after performing strongly in global competition during the past two years.
“I’m excited just to see how much faster he goes”, Phelps told reporters about Schooling. “That was fun. I like racing Michael”.
The most decorated Olympian of all time lost the gold to Joseph Schooling of Signapore.
The 800 free relay guys said four more years. No.
Phelps’s impressive longevity in the sport is part of the reason such a picture is even possible – he’s competed in four Olympic games, and numerous athletes who grew up looking up to him have channeled that admiration into their own success.
“It’s kind of special, and a decent way to finish my last individual race”.
“Strange is not the right word”.
But one news outlet, Mercury News, which covers the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area news, had one very regrettable headline about the evening of competition.
Phelps, who exacted crushing revenge on le Clos in Rio, held hands with Cseh and his bitter foe as the three men perched awkwardly together on the same step of the podium.
Katie Ledecky will also be back in action as she swims in the 800m freestyle, an event where she is the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder.
First, Hosszu, victor of three gold medals here, was overtaken in the final metres of the 200m backstroke by an estatic Dirado.
Schooling has instantly become a national hero courtesy of his Rio victory and he wants his compatriots to use his example to inspire their own dreams of sporting glory on the global stage.
In 2012, Schooling made his first Olympics debut in London as the youngest member of the Singapore’s contingent.
Hosszu, who set a world record in winning 400m medley gold then added the 100m backstroke and 200m medley titles, led through the first 150 meters, with DiRado clinging to her shoulder.
The 1984 men’s gymnastics saw four tied for silver in the vault.
