Michelle Obama wears gown by Brandon Maxwell, Gaga stylist
The First Lady has a history of giving fashion designers a bit of career boost-she wore a custom Jason Wu gown to the Canadian state dinner in 2016 and has sported looks from Alexander McQueen to Jean Paul Gaultier. Subtlety was key as she finished off the look with her hair pinned back in an updo as she dined with the guests of honor, prime minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Ho Ching.
The first lady of both the US and style stole the show with a strapless ivory gown custom-made by designer Brandon Maxwell. It also marked the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between the USA and Singapore, an island nation of about 5.7 million people.
In addition to Gaga, a number of A-listers have worn Maxwell’s creations over the years, including Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Karlie Kloss, Mariah Carey, Kate Hudson, Zendaya and Reese Witherspoon.
In June, Maxwell got the Swarovski award for women’s wear at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards.
Last week FLOTUS made another fashion statement in favor of a young American designer when she chose to wear a simple blue Christian Siriano frock as she delivered her momentous speech at the Democratic National Convention. In 2015, Maxwell launched his own ready-to-wear line, in 2014-2016 he dressed stars for Grammys and Oscars. He works as Lady Gaga’s fashion director. The color was meant to symbolize the friendship between the two countries.
