Michelle Payne snapped up to ride at Shergar Cup
Former Australian Labor leader Mark Latham has stirred controversy, this time criticising Melbourne Cup victor Michelle Payne for choosing to use her moment of triumph this week to call out sexism in horse racing.
And naturally, it’s left many people, both males and females, fuming.
“These things normally stay in-house”, he said.
Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been invited to ride in the Shergar Cup at Ascot.
Payne has been confirmed alongside Canadian Emma-Jayne Wilson in The Girls team for next August’s event after she became the first female rider to win Australia’s greatest race two days ago on 100-1 shot Prince Of Penzance.
She added: “I want to say to everyone else, get stuffed, because women can do anything and we can beat the world”.
Michelle Payne reportedly came under fire from Glenn Boss, only for his to claim he was misquoted.
Jockey Glen Boss has angrily defended himself by claiming a newspaper misrepresented comments he made about Melbourne Cup winning rider Michelle Payne. I just can’t say how grateful I am to them.
Also during the discussion, Latham told the panel that he liked watching women’s sports “in a few cases”.
In the report, Mr Boss was also cited as saying Ms Payne was breaking down barriers in racing and agreeing there was “underlying” chauvinism in the sport.
The ex-politician went on to say women’s sport was in shadow of men’s sport for a reason, as “nature has given men greater strength”.
‘He’s just taken whatever I’ve said and completely turned it upside down. Yes, it’s a male dominated sport.
“I admire her so much”. That’s the truth of the thing.
’20 years ago there were no women. but now there’s probably 20 per cent of young ladies riding in our sport which is fantastic’.
