Michelle Wilkins whose baby was cut out of her womb describes attack
A Colorado woman who was the victim of a violent attack a year ago that resulted in the death of her unborn daughter testified Wednesday during the trial of her accused attacker.
Investigators say that Wilkins responded to an online ad for baby clothes and went to Lane’s apartment when she was attacked, according to Fox 31 Denver.
Lane is accused of luring the almost eight-months-pregnant Wilkins to her house by advertising free maternity clothes, then cutting the baby from her abdomen and claiming the child was her own.
Lane is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy in the gruesome attack on Michelle Wilkins in March 2015.
“She cut me”, Wilkins said in the recording.
That prompted Colorado Republicans to introduce legislation that would have allowed prosecutors to file murder charges for killing a fetus, but Democrats rejected it. It was the third time such a proposal failed in Colorado, setting it apart from 38 states that have made the killing of a fetus a homicide.
“I just remember someone touched my wound and it was just so painful I asked for them to put me under”, she said. Investigators say Lane had a weird fascination with pregnancy.
The baby did not survive the attack but it was not until the following day, she was told.
“You are dancing on an extremely fine line but one that could have a huge impact once jurors begin to deliberate Dylen Lane’s fate”, Decker said.
Lane, as she did the first day of the trial, sat emotionless throughout the proceedings on Thursday.
Wilkins says she remembers regaining consciousness and trying to stand, but being unable to.
Prosecutors say evidence shows that Lane was “obsessed with being pregnant” and had been lying to her longtime partner about being pregnant herself.
“I felt like I was being thoughtful, you know, and listening to her and being kind to her. But eventually I said, ‘I really have to go'”.
Wilkins said they wrestled as she tried to escape.
Officer Billy Sawyer described coming in to a blood-filled scene, discovering a knife on the floor and broken bottle beside the bed on which he found Wilkins. Ridley says he returned home on the afternoon of March 18 thinking he and Lane would be going to a doctor visit together, and then finding her shirtless, covered in blood, and saying she’d suffered a miscarriage. He said he picked the baby up and checked for signs of life.
Ridley testified that Lane’s due date kept shifting and she refused to see a doctor with him.
He had planned to meet her for a pre-natal appointment the day of the attack. The trial resumes at 9 a.m. on Thursday. She remains in custody on a $2 million bond.
