Michigan AG to discuss investigation into Flint water crisis
We knew (our folks in Detroit, SEMCOG, Genesee County Officials, some members of the State Legislature, and the Governor at that time) new that there were significant issues with all of those items.
The mayor and city council who presided over this debacle are attempting to shift responsibility to the emergency manager, Darnell Earley (himself a Democrat), and to Governor Snyder for appointing him. And he certainly can’t be blamed for the Detroit school system’s decaying facilities and wrecked finances, which have prompted teacher boycotts this month.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has apologized for regulatory failures and other things that led to Flint’s crisis.
Flint officials say the city is in a “very precarious situation” as a growing number of people are refusing to pay for water service. But the water wasn’t properly treated and it became contaminated with lead.
“We will do our job thoroughly and let the chips fall where they may….” The governor said it’s being paid for with private, not public, money.
“We are committed to supporting Walmart and other groups in water relief efforts for the Flint community”, said Lori George Billingsley, vice president of Community Relations, Coca-Cola North America. “We go into this with no preconceptions”.
Flood mostly declined to discuss which laws may have been broken, except to note there are prohibitions against misconduct by public officials.
The water scandal in Flint, Michigan has numerous ingredients for a mass, class-action lawsuit: danger signs that may have been ignored, many thousands of potential victims, the possibility of lifelong health problems, and the alleged systemic failure of people in charge.
Schuette gave no timetable for the investigation.
The city, which is now battling a water crisis, switched to the Flint River water supply in 2014 to save money while building a more cost-effective regional water system to bring in water from Lake Huron.
The event organizer, Karanja Cook, said he is collecting cases of bottled water, baby wipes and water filters that he will personally take to Flint this Friday.
The Flint water crisis is a national debate with everyone from celebrities to everyday folks criticizing Gov. Snyder. A state Democratic lawmaker on Monday asked U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to launch a probe, saying Schuette waited too long and questioning whether the Republican’s investigation will be impartial.
“My wife and I were born and raised in Flint, Michigan”, Tinley Schools Dir. of Operations Edreece Redmond said.
Extremely high levels of lead have been found in the city’s water supply, forcing residents to drink, bathe, and cook with bottled water.
A news conference to announce the donation will take place Tuesday morning. And, today, the state’s attorney general named a special counsel to investigate exactly what happened. According to CBS Detroit, Kilpatrick’s appeal to the US Supreme Court came after a lower federal appeals court expressed no interest in taking a second look at his case. Arena now heads the Detroit Crime Commission, a nonprofit aimed at reducing criminal activity.
