Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder takes responsibility for Flint’s water crisis: “I”
Among the actions Snyder called for was to have road projects include discussions on what more can be done to fix infrastructure at the time the projects are underway.
The Republican governor devoted much of the roughly hour-long speech to the disaster, blaming the situation on “government” failures at the federal, state and local level before telling Flint residents “I let you down”.
The city of Flint, Mich., has been suffering from a water contamination crisis for over a year, and after the deaths of several due to possible connections to the lead in the water, the residents are now not only raising health concerns, but calling for the arrest of Michigan’s governor, Rick Snyder.
Outside where the governor spoke in Lansing, protesters gathered and demanded their governor step down.
Snyder admitted his office knew last summer that Flint residents had complained they were “getting blown off” by state environmental officials.
“You really don’t want to think about it, you want to block it out of your mind”, she told CNN.

Despite their opinion of the plan, many lawmakers agree they’re willing to spend what it takes to help thousands exposed to lead in Flint’s water.
During the discovery process, Goodman said, attorneys and their clients should receive within six weeks emails and other documents from various government officials, including Snyder, that could shed light on a critical yet heretofore unanswered question: How the heck did this occur?
Residents now depend on bottled and filter water.
Snyder has since apologized and on Tuesday pledged in State of the State address to fix the problem.
The 2014 decision to switch Flint’s water source to the Flint River was made by an emergency manager.
“Medium- and long-term needs are still being assessed and will be addressed in a future supplemental request”, according to a letter sent by state Budget Director John Roberts to the leadership in the House and Senate. “Snyder must go”, a group chanted from the steps of the state capitol.
President Barack Obama met on Tuesday with Flint Mayor Karen Weaver to discuss the issues and reiterated that his administration would support state and local officials.
“And now we’ve got the whole world looking at Rick Snyder and, hopefully, that will force him to change, because we had to drag him kicking and screaming into this fight.”
Flint returned to the Detroit water system in October and Snyder declared a state of emergency in the city January 5.
Since the initial water switch, 87 residents have been confirmed for Legionnaires disease and 10 people have died.
“Water is a basic right, so it’s a social issue”, Weaver said. The White House says the officials assured Weaver that the federal government would be a “constructive partner” on the city’s response and recovery.
The state also failed to adequately test the water and to act when it learned that children in Flint had high blood lead levels.
