Flint is not the first city in the Midwest to have a drinking water crisis.
Just a few weeks later, in October, the city reverted to using Detroit’s Lake Huron water supply, but the damage was done to the lead pipes. Thousands of children may have been exposed to lead, which could irreversibly harm their health and brain functioning. Instead of getting Lake Huron water treated by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, as the city had for years, Flint started drawing more corrosive and polluted water from the Flint River and treating it at the city water treatment plan. It could cost .5 billion to fix the problem, a staggering sum for any city, much less one already struggling as badly as Flint is.
