Michigan House approves $28M in aid for Flint
Elevated lead levels were found in the water supply in Flint after the city disconnected from Detroit’s water line to save money and began drawing water from the Flint River in April 2014.
“There’s tons of evidence on what lead does to a child, and it is one of the most damning things that you can do to a population”, Hanna-Attisha told CNN.
“Andy ultimately signed off on the KWA because he felt it was acceptable financially, number one, and the DEQ had signed off on the technical part of it, and more importantly, the local people wanted to do it”, Muchmore said Wednesday.
A group of bipartisan lawmakers including Michigan Republican Fred Upton, of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, wrote last week to Environmental Protection Agency head Gina McCarthy, requesting a briefing about the Flint contamination.
She said she wants Snyder to give Flint the services and the money needed to address the problem.
“I am very proud of what I’ve done as president, but the only job that’s more important to me is the job of father”, Obama said Wednesday during a visit to Detroit. “It is a reminder of why you can’t shortchange basic services that we provide to people”.
The auto bailouts were a central issue in Obama’s 2012 reelection bid, when Democrats reminded voters often of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s 2008 op-ed arguing against the bailout, titled “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt”. “We can’t tolerate increased lead levels in any event, but it’s really the city’s water system that needs to deal with it”. It would seem possible contamination of the water source in a relatively large US city would be a top priority priority of the health-conscious agency. “This is an embarrassment to the city of Flint, first of all, and an embarrassment to our government and to our residents”.
During Sunday’s debate, Clinton said “every single American should be outraged” by the water crisis, adding that “if the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there would have been action”.
Several lawsuits have been filed in the case. The water smelled and tasted foul, but state officials said everything was fine, even though a university research team said the lead content was dangerously high.
Snyder said during his State of the State address Tuesday that he would be releasing emails from January 2014 through December 2015 in an effort to be more transparent about the story that has gain national attention. It can severely affect mental and physical development, especially in children for whom the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes there’s “no safe blood lead level”.
Obama said little about the series of auto recalls on Wednesday, but he touted his administration’s pledge earlier this week to spend billion on testing self-driving cars.
During the discovery process, lawyers said, attorneys and their clients should receive emails and other documents from government officials, including Snyder, that could shed light on a critical yet unanswered question: How did this happen? This stems from the local tap water malfunction in Flint, Michigan where the water contains unusually high levels of lead. “They were not responding in a proper way, and when they were confronted, they still denied it”.
“It is pernicious”, he said.
The ordeal has cast a cloud over Flint, a blue-collar city of about 100,000 that’s been through tough times before – but nothing like this. “People’s lives were damaged and that’s not right”, he told WDET-FM.
“While the Flint crisis has been heavily politicized, the Cruz campaign’s donation isn’t as helpful as it could be”, Petersen wrote for Refinery 29 on Wednesday.
