Michigan-native released by Iran now reunited with family in Germany
He and several other Americans in Iranian jails were eventually freed in a prisoner swap – the result of 14 months of secret negotiations between the US and Iran. The exchange was announced Saturday as Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif were meeting in Vienna, where the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran had fulfilled its obligation to ship 8.5 tons of enriched uranium out of the country and disable thousands of centrifuges so they can’t be used to produce fuel for nuclear weapons.
Journalist Jason Rezaian, former Marine Amir Hekmati and pastor Saeed Abedini are at a USA military hospital in Germany undergoing medical checks.
None is in USA custody, and officials have determined that efforts to have them extradited will not succeed.
Republican Presidential frontrunner Donald Trump – the consummate deal maker – complained that Iran won clemency for seven Iranians charged or imprisoned for sanctions violations and $150 billion of freed up funds to boot in exchange for the release of four Americans including Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian.
Detailing his confidence in the state of the world and Iran, he said “Following the nuclear deal, you-especially young Iranians-have the opportunity to begin building new ties with the world”.
“And believe me, it’s hard when somebody says to you, ‘Hey, you give us this guy, we let them all out.’ And you have to say no. And you know you’re keeping people in a not very nice place for the next whatever number of months”, he said. Dan Kildee of Michigan, Robert Pittenger of North Carolina and Jared Huffman of California. “Iran has undertaken significant steps that many – and I do mean many – people doubted would ever come to pass”.
For the first time in 17 years, civil rights leaders gathered at the South Carolina Statehouse to pay homage to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. without the Confederate flag casting a long shadow over them. The only thing he said was, ‘I was interrogated about them, ‘ ” Ali Rezaian said. “It’s the first time I’ve met him, but I think he’s … going to be fine”. “So we went back to work”, Kerry said. US officials contended that they were being held unjustly.
Hekmati went on to say that he had reached a point in his captivity where he had resigned himself to spending 10 years in prison.
Though long an advocate for Hekmati’s release, Kildee had never met Hekmati until Monday. Also present were Hekmati’s twin sister, Leila, and Sarah Hekmati’s husband, Ramy Kurdi.
Hekmati had been allowed to leave prison for medical treatment in recent weeks, his family told The New York Times.
“There are claims, continually… that the EPA has oversight, but not direct authority of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality”, says Kildee.
“I want people to know that physically I’m feeling good”, Rezaian said. The former Marine infantryman and Arabic and Persian linguist was accused of espionage and other charges in 2012. “It’s Iranian money that sits in other countries that was locked up because of worldwide nuclear sanctions that were created to bring them to the table to negotiate a nuclear agreement”.
Matthew Trevithick, a student who was recently detained, was also released – but not as part of the prisoner swap.
Whether U.S.-Iranian relations enter an era of détente similar to the United States and the Soviet Union 40 years ago remains to be seen.
Albright rang Kildee on Monday during dinner. “Before I left last night and got onto the plane, we had complete clarity that she was going to leave, no issue, it just was a glitch”. “He was just really surprised”.
