Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh “bitterly disappointed” in officiating
Trace McSorley completed 17 of 23 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns and No. 8 Penn State beat Michigan State 45-12 to win the Big Ten East on Saturday. However, a touchdown run by Ohio State’s Mike Weber cut the lead to just three points. But in the Big Ten championship game they’re stunned by Michigan State, and the deflated Buckeyes also lost to Clemson in the Orange Bowl, finishing the season 12-2, Meyer’s only two-loss season with Ohio State, so far. Ohio State kicker Tyler Durbin missed two field goals in regulation for Ohio State, and MI quarterback Wilton Speight threw two costly interceptions and fumbled a snap deep in Buckeye territory.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer who fell to the turf moments after Curtis Samuel ran for the winning touchdown Saturday night was either too flustered to think about it immediately after the game or didn’t want to get into it.
While it might not have held the official matchup, Ohio State won the Big Ten title this week against MI.
Ohio State players and fans celebrate their win over MI in an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio. One play later, J.T. Barrett barely got the first down, extending the possession.
It took two overtimes, but everything is still alive for Ohio State – and for the Big Ten, which could still get two teams into the College Football Playoff, depending on what happens beyond Columbus.
Wisconsin and Penn State will meet in Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium at 8 p.m. Saturday.
After No. 5 Washington beat Washington State in the Apple Cup on Friday, the Huskies are well positioned to snag a playoff spot if they can win next Friday’s Pac-12 championship game against Colorado, which won the Pac-12 South by beating Utah 27-22.
Ohio State-Michigan didn’t disappoint. Penn State trailed 12-10 at halftime, but outscored the Spartans 35-0 in the second half. Barkley left in the third quarter with an apparent right leg injury and did not return.
No. 5 Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 17: In Madison, Wisconsin, Corey Clement ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, a big-play defense pitched a second-half shutout, and the Badgers beat the Gophers for their 13th straight win in the annual border rivalry. As a side note, while I admire Jim Harbaugh for speaking his mind after the game, he appeared to pin everything on the officiating, which isn’t a good look. The showdown lived up to the hype, going into double overtime with Ohio State leaving as the established alpha in the Big Ten. It has won eight in a row since that defeat and has made a remarkable turnaround to reach its first Big Ten Championship Game.
The loss likely eliminated MI from the playoff race.
In the first overtime, Barrett scored on a 7-yard run and MI countered with a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down from quarterback Wilson Speight to wide receiver Amara Darboh to tie the score 24-24. Scott rushed for 11 yards on third-and-2, and Shelton, a wide receiver, threw a 15-yard pass to Terry to set up Geiger’s next field goal, from 36 yards out.
As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes’ playoff spot is secure because their regular season is over. They took out their frustration on MI, followed by thumping Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
Stock up: Oklahoma State.
