Michigan’s population increases slightly in past year
New census data shows Michigan’s population barely increased in the past year, even as experts say thousands of residents were relocating to other states.
North Carolinas population gain over the July 1, 2014, to July 1, 2015, period ranked it behind the increases of Texas, Florida, California, Georgia and Washington.
New growth has also made Utah more diverse. The population of the United States rose to 321.4 million, with the most populous states being California (39 million), Texas (27.5 million), Florida (20.3 million) and NY (19.8 million).
Florida is the third state to break the 20-million mark.
Meanwhile, some 72,374 immigrants from other countries arrived in Minnesota, while births outnumbered deaths by more than 152,000.
Arizona added almost 100,000 residents over the past year, sluggish gains by the state’s historic standards, but enough to remain among the fastest-growing states in the nation.
“We’re moving closer and closer to time when it will be harder and harder to grow from births alone”, she said.
Colorado’s growth rate of almost 1.9 percent was the second-best in the nation, behind North Dakota’s almost 2.3 percent.
Illinois, West Virginia and CT lost more residents during that time than Mississippi.
Continued robust population growth signals a potential surge in political power for Southern states into the foreseeable future.
New Hampshire’s population grew to 1,330,608 in between 2014 and 2015, an increase of 2,612 persons.
“That suggests that the state’s strong economy is attracting people here for jobs”, Dean said.
So the total “net domestic migration” loss since the 2010 census was 653,071 people, the most of any state, the group said.
