Michigan State’s Watts-Jackson injured after winning TD
Calls made. Calls not made.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Baker Mayfield threw five touchdown passes and Oklahoma bounced back from its upset loss to Texas to beat Kansas State, the first time the Wildcats have been shut out since 1996.
“Intense”, Dantonio would say.
Bolden entered the day as Michigan’s leading tackler on the season and had two stops before he was ejected. Dantonio’s. 778 winning percentage is the highest for any Spartan coach against the Wolverines (second: Duffy Daugherty, .579, 10-7-2 record from 1954-72). And for the maize and blue, only the second win in the last seven years was within reach for the Wolverines over their rivals in East Lansing, but it was not to be. It was 10 seconds away. They even went ahead and gave head coach Guy Morriss a Gatorade bath. “You go out there and play your hearts out with your teammates”.
It started with strategy. And after being forced to punt on its next possession, Michigan State failed on a fourth-and-19 with under two minutes to play.
He was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field by Michigan State’s medical personnel. A field goal in either situation renders the final play unnecessary. Now there were only six blockers.
This was the topper of them all, though, and it does show the Spartans competitive character. And then… you fumble.
The Sooners took a 35-0 lead into halftime and just kept rolling in the second half. It wasn’t ideal, but ideal was dead.
Rutgers erased a 25-point third-quarter deficit by converting three fourth-quarter turnovers into touchdowns, and Kyle Federico delivered the knockout blow – a 26-yard field goal as time expired – for an incredible 55-52 victory at Indiana.
There would have been nothing left but a Hail Mary attempt, always possible but never probable. Russell became the only Baylor quarterback other than Robert Griffin III in 2011 to throw for 300 yards and run for 100 in the same game as the Bears cruised to a 62-38 victory over West Virginia.
“I talked to him”, said Harbaugh, “and he said that after he bobbled it, he still thought he could kick it. It was a mistake”. We’ll come back and we’ll build and we’ll steel ourselves against it. So, he had a better chance than most of getting off that kick. As O’Neill was hit, he was spun around and his right arm batted the ball up in the air.
Watts-Jackson couldn’t even savor the moment. Sorry for more bad memories, Michigan fans, but this one is deserving of a spot. Also risky, but it was a long return and being tackled short of the goal line once the clock ran out would have ended the game in Michigan’s favor. Maybe not, but it would’ve been close.
“Mentally”, Dantonio said, “we were four times stronger than we were physically”.
OK, not exactly that ending – but an ending very similar to that one.
“I’m like, ‘Jalen, you won us the game. It’s like he said, we’ve got to have “steel in our spine” and move on”. “He couldn’t get up”.
“The snap was low – just below the knees”, said Harbaugh. Others began to cry.
Michigan State defensive back Jalen Watts-Jackson (20) is…
The Michigan sideline was a picture of depression, confusion, anger.
