Michigan Wolverines’ Rudock shines in blowout of #22 BYU
Michigan won 31-0.
BYU has come through with two big victories against the Nebraska and Boise State and they are very deserving of the ranking that they have received. A former four-star recruit, Mangum has shown why he got so much hype coming out of college. Saturday against Michigan the Cougars were beaten from pillar to post for the full 60 minutes. The Michigan defense held BYU to just 101 yards of offense. Michigan obliterated the Cougars with impunity from the jump.
Mangum looked like a freshman for the first time this season, connecting on just 12 of 28 passes for 55 yards.
De’Veon Smith rushed for 125 yards on 16 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Michigan has four backs in Smith, Green, Ty Isaac and Drake Johnson that all look like they can contribute. Brigham Young was outgained 448-105; converted 27 percent of its third-down attempts; and generated only eight first downs. “They’re playing a good as a team and individually”.
So where does that leave Michigan?
Michigan being good does a few things. “He’s so good because he’s a do-stuff-right guy all the time”.
In order for the Cougars to make a big bowl game, they would have to be taken as an at-large team.
The first quarter of the game saw just one completed pass for the Cougars, a 14-yarder to Devon Blackmon that was tipped by a defender. Michigan’s defense has allowed opponents to throw for under 150 yards per contest, which ranks 13 nationally.
And through four games, Michigan has the second-best defense in America. The Wolverines are 47th in rushing and 96th in passing. It also let upcoming Big Ten opponents that this is not last year’s team and it will not be a team that’s easy to beat.
The offensive line continues to improve each week and is starting to finish off blocks better and more consistently. Rudock’s newfound efficiency was largely thanks to the time he had while going through his progressions in the pocket. The Cougars came out flat and never got better as the game went on. He was later taken across the field and to the locker room on a cart.
Peck said he felt the Wolverines established what type of game it was going to be in the early going. But the heart of the offense is on the line, and that’s where Tim Drevno has seen the most improvement.
The conference is tough. 1 and 2 in the country. He also caught the games only receiving touchdown.
But even without him, Michigan’s path to a 10-win season doesn’t seem as daunting as it might have three weeks ago.
And the Wolverines are built to wear down those ready to be worn down. After three straight dominant afternoon home games, can they transfer that to College Park, Md., at night? It looks like Michigan again. During that 2013 season, Michigan, who were ranked No. 17 and defeated the No. 14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Wolverines had just gotten the ball back deep in their own territory on a punt.
“Michigan has a fine football team that is really well coached”, he said. Now the betting odds for the game have the Wolverines favored to pick up the win.
Harbaugh was happy with the win, but doesn’t want his team to get too excited.
