Michigan woman has confirmed case of Zika Virus
There have been two reported cases, including a recent one in Texas, and at least two other reports of the Zika virus found in semen. The antibody tests let doctors determine whether an individual, especially pregnant women and new mothers, ever had the virus, even if they are not now sick.
Three pregnant woman in Florida have tested positive for the Zika virus after traveling from outside the USA, the Florida Department of Health said on its website Wednesday.
Queensland Health have assured pregnant women living nearby that the risk of them getting Zika is “very, very low”. Recently, rumors claiming that something else other than the mosquito-borne virus has caused microcephaly and other birth defects have begun taking shape.
Last week, Miami-Dade County asked for federal and state funds to prevent the Zika virus from spreading and to fight the Aedes aegypti mosquito responsible for transmitting it, along with dengue fever and Chikungunya.
Although sexual transmission of Zika virus infection is possible, mosquito bites remain the primary way that Zika virus is transmitted, the CDC noted.
Local species of mosquitos capable of carrying Zika, Aedes aegypti, were breeding in that area, the department said.
It is suspected to cause microcephaly, a condition where babies are born with unusually small heads and incomplete brain development. Health officials now have “no evidence that women can transmit Zika virus to their sex partners; however, more research is needed to understand this issue”.
Both showed the mild flu-like symptoms that most Zika patients exhibit, and both had rashes, Nemecek said, adding that they were left in home care.
Pernambuco state has suffered the most cases of microcephaly among the country’s newborns.
The link hasn’t been confirmed but the possibility has prompted health officials to take cautionary steps to protect fetuses from the virus.
Michigan’s first confirmed Zika contact arrived from the Caribbean island of Barbados in the body of a 61-year-old Lansing-area woman who has since recovered, said Vail.
