Microsoft doesn’t care about PS4 sales
“We are truly humbled by the success of the PS4, and we would like to thank gamers for making it the top-selling console and number one in software sales in the United States in July”, a spokesperson told Games Beat.
Predictably the PlayStation 4 saw the most software sales of the month, although surprisingly the Xbox 360 was second. While there is obviously always that level of competition there, Xbox head Phil Spencer does not actually set goals based on Sony’s sales. That’s likely due to a combination of Lego Jurassic World and July being generally a very slow period for game sales. We’re seeing more people online, more games being sold, more consoles being sold.
Once again it’s a pretty familiar story in the US market this month with the PlayStation 4 doing well for itself while the Xbox One sits back and licks its wounds for another month.
“At the end, when people make a commitment to Xbox and the consoles they buy, the games they buy, they want to know that Microsoft and Xbox is in it for the long run”.
Since the introduction of new game hardware from Microsoft and Sony in November 2013, the retail game industry has been struggling to stabilize itself as it transitions away from old hardware, released nearly 10 years ago, to new devices released in the past two years.
“Sales of new launches were down 3% in July 2015, but May and June launches are comparing favourably to the performance of launches of last year, up a combined 20%”.
Software sales for the month were led by LEGO Jurassic World, which hit the top spot after charting third in July.
Sony expects the momentum to continue into the fall as it preps yet another hardware bundle with Activision Blizzard‘s space shooter Destiny, which releases a large update in September.
Microsoft, meanwhile, said that “Xbox One and Xbox Live continued to see strong sales and engagement in July, with Xbox One sales in the U.S. up 44 percent over July 2014 and active global Xbox Live users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) up 22 percent”.
The negative though is that proximity from the server and internet speed would greatly affect your experience, even if you are playing a singleplayer game.
