Microsoft is Shutting Down a few MSN Mobile Apps
But killing the latter app seems like a real blow to Microsoft’s nascent health initiative. MSN Travel will also be discontinued on September 8, the source writes. Food & Drink will be leaving on September 28, as well MSN Travel.
Because of this, the impact to each app will vary.
Photosynth is an app that allows users to create panoramas that are presented in 3-D for other users to scroll through. Currently, Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant will link to the Travel app to give you details about upcoming flights and trips.
In tandem with this, Neowin reports that Microsoft is withdrawing its Photosynth photo-stitching app. The online service will continue, but users of the app are advised to upload their images if they want to be able to use them in the future. Microsoft representatives didn’t have a response to that question at press time.
On the chopping block is Microsoft’s Photosynth app, which helps people create and share panoramic pictures and “Synth” pictures.
Microsoft has been making efforts to integrate Band with other services, and in April it revealed of a work-in-progress to combine the Band with two popular apps- MapMyRide and Strava. Oddly, Health & Fitness will be discontinued a little later; it lives on until November 1. It even tracks walking and running steps by default-something that the Band itself does not, unless you specify a “workout”.
Microsoft is also opening its Health Cloud platform to developers.
Unfortunately, the MSN Health & Fitness Web site offers just a general list of health-related news, without offering anything specific to users. However, the level of usefulness will totally depend upon the amount of information that users store in their cloud-based accounts. We will continue to support those apps with broad consumer appeal including News, Weather, Sports and Money, which will be made available as apps on Windows 10 and will remain cross platform. And maybe by then Windows 10 and Microsoft Health will have carved out a viable alternative.
