Microsoft leak suggests Edge extensions are close to release
Microsoft’s Edge has been a work in progress even after the launch of the browser with Windows 10, but one of the biggest missing pieces of the puzzle – extensions that allow you to customise the browser as you see fit – could be about to arrive. The good news on that front is that at least it should be pretty easy to get a shed-load of extensions across when they finally come to Edge. While obviously a placeholder due to its lack of mention of a particular Windows 10 build, it does suggest that it won’t be long before Edge can support the function-enhancing extensions.
Although said page has now been pulled by Microsoft, before it was downed some screenshots were grabbed to give us an idea of what it was showing.
Developed under the codename Project Spartan then launched as Edge, the Windows 10 browser marks a move away from Internet Explorer – kept around only for legacy support, particularly in older enterprise sites which don’t like the new rendering engine rewritten from the ground up to support shiny new functionality. Microsoft will integrate the process directly into the Edge browser in release versions. Reddit and Pinterest extensions appear to be the only test extensions ready for the initial preview.
To install extensions, Edge users need to download the extension file to their local system.
A quick comparison of the Edge and Chrome version of Reddit Enhancement Suite reveals that both extensions are almost identical which confirms Microsoft’s claim that the porting of Chrome extensions to Edge is a simple process. If so, what do you like about it over more established browsing competitors like Chrome and Firefox?
