Microsoft Makes Project Spark Free, Kills Off Conker DLC
Released in 2014, Project Spark allows players to create 3D environments and design simple gameplay objectives using a suite of creative tools.
Project Spark is a powerful, yet simple way to build and play your own worlds, stories, and games. The team behind it announced it will pivot to “a free and open creation platform“.
It would appear that uptake has been slow, however, and Microsoft is responding by making Project Spark entirely free. This will happen within 30-60 days after the October 5 update release date.
However what may ease that pain a little is that those who purchased a retail disc or digital content after July 28th, or have a balance of purchased in-game tokens remaining will be compensated in Microsoft Store credit.
Destructoid reports that Project Spark will add in a new set of DLC with 200+ new assets.
Microsoft has accepted defeat in trying to make money from its creation game Project Spark, which started out as a free-to-play title but will soon ditch all paid content and go completely free.
Project Spark will convert to a “free incubation engine” on October 5.
The good news for those that already bought it or other DLC on or after July 28, 2015, you will be getting a refund in the form of Microsoft store credit.
Sandil continued: “Project Spark inspires and empowers over 200,000 creators who have shared tens of millions of custom objects, behaviors and experiences”. The plan is to offer refunds to players if they meet certain requirements which you can check out on the Project Spark FAQ page. ‘This also means that we will no longer create episodic adventures, including future Conker’s Big Reunion episodic content, ‘ Sandil admitted. According to today’s announcement, Microsoft will focus on encouraging the Project Spark community to increase its output, which now sits around 300-400 new uploads per day.
