Microsoft Office Gets A Google Drive Plug
This update allows users to use Office for Windows to open Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents stored in Google Drive on the web, straight from the cloud, edit them, then save them back to Drive (in the cloud) when they’re done.
It’s important to note that the plugin doesn’t appear to work with any versions of Office that are nonstandard.
The Android versions of Microsoft Office do have Google Drive integration by default, while Redmond has also released an Office Remote app which does pretty much what the name suggests.
Google Drive and Microsoft Office are playing nice. Google said, about their plug-in, that “with this plug-in, you can use the apps you’re already comfortable with, while benefitting from the security and convenience of Google Drive”.
You could, of course, always use Google’s desktop application for Drive to sync locally stored files with Google Drive already, but this new feature makes this a far more integrated experience for Office Users.
Everyone knows that Microsoft has a new company-wide vision with its new CEO, and part of that vision is getting its start productivity suite, Microsoft Office, running on and working with all the major platforms out there.
The Google Drive Plug-In for Microsoft Office is a free download, now for Windows only.
There’s an interesting bit of speculation making the rounds about recent activity between Microsoft and Google. Grab yourself a copy of the plugin from Google. Google has created a plugin that adds built in support for Google Drive, and automation fans will be pleased to learn that Office 365 channels have now gone live on IFTTT.
