Microsoft soon to launch a Dialer app for Android
This app from Microsoft is aimed to come over the slow internet connection issues and as such India has been chosen for trial of the app. After successful testing of the app in India, it will be rolled out to other countries. The app works on 3G as well as slower networks (2G).
Gadgets 360’s sources say that while Microsoft is focused on the Android version at the moment, the Dialer app is also destined for release on Windows 10 Mobile. The new app will reportedly be named Dialer, and is already undergoing testing if sources quoted by NDTV are to be believed. Though one has to be informed that the company hasn’t made any official declaration and therefore the final feature list on the Microsoft Dialer app may change. If you’re in India and interested in getting your hands on this app as soon as possible, head to the Skype Community Page and join their pre-release program. “We have no specific news on product announcements planned in India to share today”.
They are able to do that by applying a open-source compatibility layer called Wine, which seeks to re-implement the Windows API and allow Windows applications to function on non-Windows operating systems.
While everything we’ve heard leads to one thinking about the app as “Skype lite”, given the name of the app, Microsoft’s Dialer could well be a replacement for the default dialler app that comes on your Android phone, with seamless Skype integration thrown-in.
If it launches such a feature in India, Microsoft will have to compete against very popular applications, such as Hike Messenger and WhatsApp, so it will be interesting to see how the company actually manages to tackle local demand for voice calling. WhatsApp recently added to group voice calling ability.
While these apps continue to bloom, Skype is starting to lose appeal, especially amongst the younger, mobile-first audience. It claims that its software will allow Android devices to run Windows apps – even desktop applications. What are your thoughts about a new voice calling app designed and developed by Microsoft for Android?
