Microsoft to buy GitHub for $7.5 billion
A considerable measure has changed from that point forward, and under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft is supporting numerous tastes of Linux and has utilized open-source models on some critical cloud and designer items.
As a company that went from a small startup to one of the world’s largest code repositories, until now Github had always espoused a wish to remain independent.
‘The era of intelligent cloud and intelligent edge is upon us, ‘ Nadella wrote in a blog post. But he also said programming for mobile devices and for the Internet of Things will be supported more directly within GitHub. The platform is used by more than 28 million developers and 1.5 million companies, but generates a loss.
In a rather long-winded but thoroughly informative Twitter storm, developer Erick Sink succinctly illustrates why the rush to judgment of the GitHub purchase by some developers may be misplaced at this time.
Github’s rivals are even exploiting the news in marketing campaigns with surprising success.

The deal will add to Microsoft’s operating income, including some costs, in its fiscal year 2020, the company said in a statement Monday.
Other coders were similarly pleased.
Jim Goetz, a partner at prevalent tech venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, said: “In just ten years, Github has become the de facto way for people to build software”.
Following months of talks and rumors, Microsoft has finally officially revealed that it has agreed to acquire GitHub. Ultimately, though, it would be the developer’s choice, not Microsoft’s.
Back in the early 2000s, as open-source software gained popularity, Microsoft was its biggest opponent.
Nadella called attention to the company’s flipped perspective on open-source software on the Monday conference call.
In Ballmer’s later years as CEO, the company began to soften its stance.
AWS and Google both use GitHub as a home for open-source projects they’ve contributed to the community, and offer services for customers who want to run the open-source Git project on cloud infrastructure for managing version control for their development efforts. “When it comes to our commitment to open source, judge us by the actions we have taken in the recent past, our actions today, and in the future”.
Plenty of developers aren’t quite ready to trust the software giant. GitLab, a repository manager, offers numerous same features as Github, but comes with a few extras, like built-in continuous integration and delivery. “I’ve been a developer since I was six”, Friedman said. “Not because GitHub is owned by Microsoft but because it’s a fundamentally different and better product”.
