Microsoft wants to kill off email subject lines on your iPhone
However, if you just want to send a quick message, ask a question, or fire off a reply, it’s often not as speedy or convenient as text messaging.
“With Send, there are no signatures, subject lines or salutations required”.
The Send app is available today via the iOS App Store.
Microsoft thinks email can be a bit too cumbersome by modern communication standards; you have to open the app, open a compose window, type your contact into the recipient field, and then write a subject line before you even really get to your message. And on mobile they feel especially out of place, turning a simple email into a “form” to fill out, which can be one of the most frustrating tasks on your smartphone.
Drop a line to catch up (“Let’s chat in 10”), send an urgent notice (“Don’t send the presentation yet”), or just carry on back-and-forth conversation.
There is no shortage of enterprise social networking apps that aim to improve collaboration and replace email. To sum it up in one sentence, Send is a bit of mix between email and instant messaging. All you need is someone’s email address and you can message them from anywhere, no need to ask for their phone number or user name.
However, Send will apparently connect to Outlook, and the messages you send and receive will be archived in Outlook-how isn’t exactly clear. Send also makes a user’s frequent and recent email contacts more accessible, and only displays emails started in the app, not every email in your inbox.
The app is available on iPhone right now, with versions for Android and Windows Phone slated for release later this year. The app works for people with Office 365 business and school email accounts, though Microsoft says it will be more broadly available in the coming months. The idea is that most people don’t have their colleague’s phone number listed in their contacts, but they normally have their email address. The app also appears to be designed to expand Outlook and Office 365 as both would help the software giant to enhance its market presence in the coming future.
