Microsoft Windows turns 30

In 1995 Windows NT 3.51 ran on IBM’s PowerPC chip as well as DEC’s Alpha and the MIPS processor, which NT had already supported since version 3.1 (in 1993). Since Microsoft continued to state that Windows 10 was developed to bring all levels of computing together through a single binding interface, a similar base code powering them could seem like a reality that is highly achievable in the distant future.

Your Start menu could contain not-so-helpful “suggestions” from Windows. Anyone who doesn’t want to take up precious internal storage space with Windows Store apps can now keep them on a thumb drive or a larger external hard drive left at home. The indefinite suspension of the Project Astoria program is therefore another setback for Microsoft’s overall mobile campaign. The Find My Device feature is turned off by default and the functionality only be activated on Windows 10 devices with the latest build which was pushed out in November.

Windows clearly isn’t the only game in town.

Windows was first announced in 1983. And even if users don’t log in to a Microsoft account, the OS still sends the data. Microsoft’s freemium strategy for mobile is not going to happen if it can not build a robust ecosystem for its own mobile advertising services. A bold new visual style, Luna, ditched the grey of old Windows interfaces and replaced it with a bright color palette that competed with Mac OS X (which launched in March 2001). At the same time, Microsoft has increased the number of sites tile that can be added to 2048 in the start menu.

Windows has come a long way in 30 years. Their regular prices range from $3 up to as much as $10, making the 10-cent prices quite a substantial discount.

Without a robust Windows app store, the multi-billion app store business will remain a duopoly between Alphabet and Apple.

Android apps are now emerging as strong cash generators. However, Apple’s “Switch to iOS” app on Google Play also provides a similar feature.

In the span of a couple of years, computers evolved from enormous, intimidating, room filling machines only found in science labs on university campuses, to consumer facing devices created to help make our lives more simple and easy.
