Migrant Dies After Boarding UK-Bound Freight Train in France
The emergency services were called but authorities later confirmed the death of the migrant.
French police have said a refugee electrocuted late Thursday near the Channel Tunnel linking France to Great Britain died trying to climb on to the roof of a train heading to the United Kingdom .
To reach the tunnel, migrants must cross a motorway on foot, climb or cut through barricades and then clamber into cargo trucks or freight cars.
“This sad incident shows once again that any attempt to travel illegally through the Channel Tunnel is fraught with danger”, Eurotunnel said.
At least 10 refugees or migrants have now died at Calais since the end of June.
Passenger services through the tunnel are operating with some timetable disruption and a waiting time of about 30 minutes as a result of the tragedy.
Tomorrow, British campaigners will be among those gathering in Calais.
An estimated 5,000 refugees and migrants displaced from countries including Syria, Libya and Eritrea are believed to be camped in and around the French port.
Many live in the infamous Jungle II camp on the outskirts of the French port town, which has become so large that it has its own church and school.
The surge in migrants attempting to cross the Channel prompted a string of measures to increase security at the terminal, including extra fencing and the deployment of more border force search and dog teams.
A migrant died after being found unconscious aboard a freight train on the high-speed Paris to London rail line, authorities said Friday.
